"Where Fear Hides"

Art: Dark Soul by Michelle Liang, OPUS 62

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

We are now accepting submissions for our BRAND NEW Themed Fall Supplemental Edition!

This supplemental edition is themed “Where Fear Hides” and will be displayed on the OPUS website. Featured pieces will be selected to be shown on the website and some may also be chosen to be included in the OPUS 63 journal.

We consider all original writing and artwork that includes—but is not limited to—poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, screenplays, satire, personal essay, photography, drawings, paintings, and digital art through an anonymous, rigorous selection process. We urge you to take risks and experiment with complex thoughts or ideas. We ask that you take the time to polish and complete your pieces before submitting them.

This year, we will have ONE submission deadline for the supplemental! If you submit to this deadline, you will be notified of the status of your piece by around early January. It is imperative that you submit by the deadline as the submissions will go through the selection process right after the deadline. Please note that we will only notify you of the status of your submission and will not be providing commentary on your work. We reserve the right to publish your work anonymously or not with your permission if we think the supplemental piece will go nicely with the 63rd edition of OPUS. *HOWEVER, please note that you cannot submit the same piece to both this edition and the journal.*

Details about these submission requirements are listed below:

FINAL DEADLINE: November 20th, 2020, 11:59 PM EST

SUBMISSION Guidelines:

click here to download the guidelines in pdf format!

  • The 2020 Fall Supplemental  urges students to reflect on the past 8 months of 2020 and consider the theme “Where Fear Hides.” You may consider any pieces of writing/art that came out of topics such as, but are not limited to:

    • Racial Injustice

    • COVID-19

    • The Future

    • Isolation/Family

    • Employment

    • Environmental Issues

    • Hope/Unity

  • The Fall Supplement also strongly encourages submissions from students who may be unsure whether or not to submit to the actual OPUS journal. The supplement is a great way to write/capture your thinking on current issues in 2020 and how fear hid throughout the world. Do not be afraid to make bold statements or write in risky structures!

  • The Fall Supplement is a way for our Herricks literary and art community to focus on the past 8 months and shed light on the hope that emerged from the evil whisperings throughout the world.
